My Top 10 Most Underrated Women In Music
#7 Mary Timony
Mary Timony reminds me of a fairy tale princess. There is something truly enchanting and mysterious about her. She has a way of transporting her listeners into worlds of Medieval magic with the lyrics like storybooks, interesting guitar tunings and time signatures. Her very unique voice sounds perfectly at home in the worlds she creates with her music. Timony was born in Washinton DC, where she became integrated into the local music scene, helping to form the all female band Autoclave (alongside Christina Billotte) in 1990-91. While living in Boston during college, Timony formed the popular 90’s band Helium. Much of Timony’s signature vocal and guitar style was shaped here; dark melodies, alternate guitar tunings and lyrics that were reminiscent of children’s fairytales. Helium called it quits in 1998 after releasing two albums, The Dirt of Luck and The Magic City and three EPs. Timony embarked on her own solo career, trading in the fuzzy guitars of Helium for a more pristine pop sound while still keeping her listeners enthralled with tales of dragons, magic, animals and insects. Of the three solo records, The Golden Dove is probably the most acclaimed and a good starting point in my opinion if you’re new to Timony’s music. It’s a very enjoyable record; the music and lyrics keep things interesting while complimenting her unique singing style. It really took a few listens for her solo work to grown on me to be honest, but when it did… Wow. I realized that I needed to own everything. Around this same time- late 90’s, early 2000s, Timony joined forces with Carrie Brownstein (who was in Sleater-Kinney at the time) to form the duo The Spells. They released The Age of Backwards EP (pretty collectable 7” nowadays) and another EP entitled Bat vs Bird. Timony also had several other collaborative projects she was involved in, along with The Mary Timony Band, releasing one album on the Northwest label, Kill Rock Stars. Now, you can find Mary Timony singing and playing guitar in the all female “supergroup” Wild Flag, which also includes vocalist/guitarist Carrie Brownstein, keyboardist Rebecca Cole of The Minders, and Sleater-Kinney/Quasi drummer Janet Weiss. Wild Flag is kick-ass! Look no further if you want music in the true spirit of rock n’ roll. If you want to dig deeper, you should look into the previous projects of Timony (and the other Wild Flag members for that matter). Mary Timony is really underrated if you ask me, and if you look into her musical past and present, there is an amazing artist waiting to be heard. So check her out!
