Helium - “Pat’s Trick”
Wanted to post this a while back, but I didn’t, and forget why. I’m in love with this song, and used to jam to this all the time back in the day. I remember first seeing this video on the What’s Up Matador? VHS tape that I used to have, and I watched it ALL the time. I just love how nonchalantly sexy as fuck Mary Timony is. And how completely apathetically Ash Bowie is rocking out behind her. The lyrics are amazing, too, and I like how the video matches the plant imagery of them.
My favorite part of the video is the little guitar half-solo thing where she slides her finger on the neck while holding the strap. As much as I love bands who go all out playing their songs in music videos (see: The Refused), I also kinda like it when they winkingly indicate that they’re still just really pretending to play their song.
I was really happy to hear about Wild Flag coming together a while back, since I love just about every part of them. I mean, if they had just found a way to include Rebecca Gates or Sarah Shannon, I would have lost my shit.
I have the hugest legitimate crush on 90s mary timony.

Pat’s Trick - Helium
this one is wilted and looks like you,
‘cause it never grew, it never grew.
this one is scrawny and looks like me,
‘cause it’s dirty, and I’m so dirty too.
we had a pirate band, a tear for every grain of sand,
and I was fighting with my hands over you,
beautiful thing, you are the most beautiful thing.
flower of life, bird of spring,
you are the most beautiful thing.
Flower of life, bird of spring
You are the most beautiful thing
Fizz: “Pat’s Trick” has that line about “the most beautiful thing.”
Mary: That chorus is talking about things that run through a lot of the songs. The idea, “the flower of life” which sounds so corny, embodies a perfect thing like an angel that brings you to heaven. I’m like imagining a perfect state of being and trying to get there.
Fizz: Do you think you can get there?
Mary: No, it’s impossible.
I am the devil and here is my fist.
I am evil, but I don’t exist.
